Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?

Acute back pain that lasts less than a few weeks may be due to muscle strains from injuries or overuse. When your back pain becomes chronic, lasting six months or longer, it may be due to underlying degenerative conditions or because of trauma.

Some of the most common causes of chronic back pain include:

  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Herniated disc
  • Pinched nerve
  • Failed back syndrome
  • Degenerative disc disease

You may also experience chronic back pain because of facet syndrome, a condition that describes deterioration in your spine’s facet joints. The facet joints give your spine stability and range of motion.

When these joints wear out and become inflamed, you may feel persistent back pain and stiffness that interferes with your mobility. Facet syndrome can also be a side effect of whiplash and other types of injury.

When should I seek help for back pain?

If you can no longer relieve chronic back pain with over-the-counter medications, you can schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Balanced Pain Management.

You should consult with Dr. DeLaney if you have persistent back pain that worsens over time, even with treatment, or if your back pain begins interfering with your ability to work or your quality of life.

Dr. DeLaney can use on-site diagnostics to identify the underlying cause of your back pain. She designs a treatment plan to provide you with long term pain relief.

How is back pain treated?

At Balanced Pain Management, you can find a variety of minimally invasive treatment options for back pain. These treatments can relieve your existing back pain and might help you delay or avoid invasive surgery.

Depending on your needs and the cause of your back pain, you may be a candidate for treatments like:

  • mild® (for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS))
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Nerve blocks
  • Facet joint blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Epidural steroid injections

Dr. DeLaney also offers regenerative medicine therapies using platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a material that contains growth factors found naturally in your blood. Over time, PRP stimulates your body to produce new, healthy cells to repair soft tissue damage in and around your spine to relieve chronic pain and improve your spine’s range of motion.

You may also be a candidate for stem cell therapy to relieve pain and heal damaged bones, nerves, and muscles from the inside out. To ensure injections go into a precise location, Dr. DeLaney relies on the guidance of in-office ultrasound and fluoroscopy (live X-ray) technologies.

If chronic back pain limits what you can do, schedule a diagnostic evaluation today by calling Balanced Pain Management, or scheduling an appointment online.
